Last year, the Federal Government introduced changes to the private health insurance rebate and the Medicare levy surcharge.
How do the changes affect me?
This year your entitlement to the private health insurance rebate is income tested. If you are single with an income for surcharge purposes of $84,000 a year or less, or a couple/family with an income for surcharge purposes of $168,000 a year or less then the change does not effect your entitlement.
If your single or family income is above these amounts, the private health insurance rebate amount you are entitled to may be different. The ATO will work out your rebate entitlement when you lodge your tax return and this may result in a refund or a liability depending on how you claim your rebate.
